This prompt has long been a Common App favorite, largely because it offers students a great deal of flexibility.

Don’t worry, one of the most common questions all high schoolers have is, “What should I write my college essay about?

” When I help students brainstorm potential essay topics, I usually ask them dozens of questions, hoping to unearth just a single response that will capture the interest of a college admissions officer.For each of these three, you should brainstorm a few ideas.Ultimately, you’ll write an essay for the prompt that yields the best essay idea.Depending on the schools to which you are applying, the Common App can greatly streamline the admissions process.For example, you could potentially apply to five schools by filling out only one application — and better yet, writing only one essay! Pizza, community service, grandmothers, barnacles…you name it, and admissions officers have probably read an essay about it. A strong Common App essay can be written on virtually any topic.Take a look at the seven available essay prompts for the 2019-20 Common App.(These prompts are unchanged from the 2018-19 application season.) As we noted in a previous blog post, prompt number 7 actually grants students permission to write their own essay question and respond to it. Despite (or perhaps in light of) all this intellectual and creative freedom, you may find yourself stuck.How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? (New)Now that you know the Common App prompts, which topic should you choose, and how should you get started?As you read through the prompts, you should choose at least three favorites.
