The dissertation secretary at Chicago for decades, Kate Turabian literally wrote the book on the successful completion and submission of the student paper. Her Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, created from her years of experience with research projects across all fields, has sold more than seven million copies since it was first published in 1937. They preserve Turabian’s clear and practical advice while fully embracing the new modes of research, writing, and source citation brought about by the age of the Internet. It looks like we are in for another long haul in our relationship. Still crossing my fingers that the academic world would just PICK ONE format and use it Recommended by all my Professors this semester, Turabian's book is a classic for anyone charged with writing essays in Chicago style formatting.
But perhaps no name has been spoken with more respect than Turabian. The dissertation secretary at Chicago for decades, Kate Turabian literally wrote the book on the successful completion and submission of the student paper. Booth—the gifted team behind The Craft of Research—and the University of Chicago Press Editorial Staff combined their wide-ranging expertise to remake this classic resource. I don’t know how long this feeling will last, though. This time, she is going to have to be right by my side. While it seems a bit easier to hunt these instructions down online, the hardcopy is a useful tool to have in your collection.
Part 2 offers a comprehensive guide to Chicago's two methods of source citation: notes-bibliography and author-date.
Part 3 gets into matters of editorial style and the correct way to present quotations and visual material.
The extensive advice about honing one’s thesis, however, is what clinches the deal.

Now, with this seventh edition, Turabian’s Manual has undergone its most extensive revision, ensuring that it will remain the most valuable handbook for writers at every level—from first-year undergraduates, to dissertation writers apprehensively submitting final manuscripts, to senior scholars who may be old hands at research and writing but less familiar with new media citation styles. Booth, Colomb, and Williams significantly expand the scope of previous editions by creating a guide, generous in length and tone, to the art of research and writing. Still, locating the text online can be more relevant in cases such as Youtube video citation or blogs which are not covered in this edition.
Most significantly, since the sixth edition, published in 1996, it has been overhauled to reflect the ubiquity of the Internet and other recent technological advances and, in addition to a reorganization, has acquired a major new section that transforms it from a dry abridgement of sister publication to a friendly guide to the qualitative aspects of developing a research paper or similar document.
It is this new component that I was intrigued to discover, because it provides great advice not just for students and others in an academic context but also anyone who needs or wants to create a thesis (and I use that word in the lay sense, of a proposition for the topic of an article, essay, book, or other content). Williams (adapting their book ) discuss the nature of research and the three distinct types of questions that researchers ask, walking readers through the process of shaping a topic into a working hypothesis and evaluating the most suitable sources for the particular research assignment.

Turabian first put her famous guidelines to paper, she could hardly have imagined the world in which today’s students would be conducting research.
